ACTFL

A PATHWAY TO THE
SEAL OF BILITERACY

At the Dutch School linguistic excellence in Dutch is celebrated. For US students aspiring to attain the Seal of Biliteracy in Dutch, the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) test is a pivotal step in showcasing their proficiency. The ACTFL test is a widely recognized language assessment that evaluates proficiency in speaking, listening, reading, and writing in the Dutch language.

ACTFL allows our American students the possibility to receive the Seal of Biliteracy on their high school diploma. In addition, it might allow high school and college students in the US to fulfill their language requirements,  receive high school credits as well as college credits (depending on the cooperation of the school/school district/college).

Other benefits are enhancement of  professional profile, standing out from the crowd and giving a competitive advantage in the job market.

Which exam?

This needs to be discussed with the counselor of your high school or college. There are listening, speaking, writing and comprehension reading tests. Sometimes a combination of ACTFL and ALTA testing is required.

When are the exams?

The ACTFL OPI & WPT SOBL assessment is available each Spring from January to May. Please coordinate with your high school or college.

How to register?

It is advised to schedule the testing with your high school or college and take and register with them. Testing can also be done from home but approval from high school or college is important.

Costs & results

The average cost of this assessment is between $140 and $160. Results will come within 1 or 2 weeks.

Seal of biliteracy

With the ACTFL certificate US students might (depending on their school/school district or college) be eligible for the Seal of Biliteracy. The ACTFL exam is accepted by many state Seal of Biliteracy programs and the list is growing every year.

The Seal of Biliteracy forms target the proficiency range of Novice Low to Advanced Mid.

At what age can I take the exam

The ACTFL OPI & WPT SOBL assessment is appropriate for high school juniors and seniors (Grades 11 & 12).

How long do the tests take?

The ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) for the Seal of Biliteracy is a 20 to 25-minute one-on-one interview between a certified ACTFL tester and the student.

The ACTFL Writing Proficiency Test (WPT) for the Seal of Biliteracy is an assessment of functional writing ability in a language. The average time test takers typically take to complete all WPT prompts ranges from 45 – 60 minutes, up to a maximun of 90 minutes.
