The ALTA test is a widely recognized language assessment that evaluates proficiency in speaking, listening, reading, and writing in a foreign language. Specifically tailored for Dutch language learners, this comprehensive test aligns with the Seal of Biliteracy criteria, offering a robust evaluation of linguistic competence.

ALTA allows our American students the possibility to receive the Seal of Biliteracy on their high school diploma. In addition, it may allow American high school and college students to fulfill their language requirements,  and/or receive high school credits or college credits (with the cooperation of the school/school district/college).

Which exam?

This needs to be discussed with your high school or college. There are listening, speaking, writing and comprehension reading tests. Sometimes a combination of ALTA and ACTFL tests is required.

When are the exams?

This exam can be taken at any time throughout the school year in cooperation with your high school or college.

How to register?

ALTA only provides testing for organizations. You take the exam at your own high school or college. Therefore registration is through them.

Cost & results

The average cost of this assessment is between $140 and $160. Results are expected within 1 or 2 weeks after the exam.

Seal of biliteracy

With the ALTA certificate US students might (depending on their school/school district or college) be eligible for the Seal of Biliteracy. The ALTA exam is accepted by 18 state Seal of Biliteracy programs and the list is growing every year.

At what age can I take the exam

It  is recommended to take the test in your Junior year (11th grade).

How long do the tests take?

The listening and speaking tests with a live speaker are over the phone and are no more than 30 minutes. The automated listening and speaking lasts 40 minutes as some sample and practice questions are included to familiarize candidates with the system. The writing test is one hour as well as the reading test. The high school or college decides which tests are required.

Benefits of taking the alta test

  • Seal of Biliteracy on the high school diploma.
  • Fulfill language requirements
  • High school and college credits (depending on the cooperation of the school/school district/college).

The above points depend on the cooperation of the school.
