The CNaVT certifies language proficiency of Dutch as a foreign language worldwide, using task based and domain specific exams related to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The CNaVT is a project commissioned by the Dutch Language Union and the exams are developed by the Centre for Language and Education at the university of Leuven. The CNaVT exams are organized all around the world of (young) adults who want to prove their language proficiency in Dutch with an internationally recognized certificate.

The Dutch School is an official testing site for CNaVT. The exams take place in May every year at our on campus location in Orange County.  If you live abroad you can have a look here to see all the exam locations worldwide.

CNaVT is for students ages 16 years and up. With the CNaVT certificate you will be able to:

  • Meet the language requirements to be able to enroll in Dutch/Flemish speaking studies at Dutch/Belgian colleges/universities (B1, B2 or C1 level)
  • Meet the language requirements for the Dutch naturalization process (B1 level)
  • Seal of Biliteracy on High School diploma for US students*
  • Meet the language course requirement of your high school or college*
  • Count towards school credits*
  • Count towards college credits*

*Cooperation of your local high school or college is  required


The exam costs $325 for students of our school and $425 for everyone else.

When are the exams?

The exams take place every year in May worldwide. This year the CNaVT exams are on Saturday May 4 from 8.30am to 3 pm in Santa Ana at our Orange County campus location.

Why and which exam?

Because there are different reasons/levels to learn Dutch, the Taalunie has developed CNaVT examinations in different domains. Read the descriptions of the CNaVT exams below and also take a look at the ERK self-assessment scales to determine which exam best suits your needs.

How to prepare?

  • Find sample exams to practice with.
  • Have your sample exam corrected by one of our teachers and book 1 or more private classes to get feedback, tips and practice a test oral exam.
  • Take our 9-week preparation course in a group- or private setting.

Seal of biliteracy

With the B1 level CNaVT certificate US students might (depending on their school) be eligible for the Seal of Biliteracy on their high school diploma. It is recommended to pass the exam during your Junior year (11th grade).

From what age can I take the exam?

 From age 16 (sometimes earlier) you can take the exam. Please take into consideration that the certificate is only valid 2 years.

How long is the certificate valid?

The certificate is valid for 2 years.

When can I expect my results back?

You can expect the results back in August. If you succeed you will receive your certificate in August.
